Embracing opportunities to lead

“I am continuously developing myself as an educator”

Every day Hayden Owens works with newly arrived migrants and refugees at his school in Noble Park English Language School.

And two years after graduating from Monash, he has taken on the role of Level Coordinator. “Our school is very diverse, [with students] learning English before progressing to a mainstream school.”

As a physical education teacher, he says that his focus not only on physical skills, but also building the language, emotional and social skills.

“I am enjoying the challenge of this new role.”

A home away from home

Hayden says it was an easy choice to come Monash, as the university offered a double degree that allowed to combine his passion for sports with education and still be close to home, on the Mornington Peninsula.

“I had always seen Monash as my 'local' university. I was set on Monash. It was my university of choice,” he explains. The choice was “all too easy.”

Hayden considers the many camps and his involvement with social clubs as highlights of his time at university, one that gave him hands-on leadership experience.

“I was lucky enough to be President of the Sport and Outdoor Recreation Social Club which was a fantastic experience,” he says.

Prepared for life after university

Hayden says his professional placements — which ran every semester — were fundamental to learning the skills he required to become a teacher.

“They allowed me to continuously develop my practice and learn from professionals in the education industry. Placements in a variety of schools gave me an introduction to how the education system runs from the perspective of a teacher.

“My placement mentors were a great influence on my development as an educator and have shaped the way I approach my teaching.”

“It was invaluable in preparing me for life beyond university.”
