Billions of dollars of research funding have been spent on the paradigm of ‘fixing the child with autism’. However, many young people do not complete school and face later underemployment. This conversation will illuminate a global perspective on the psychological and environmental barriers to inclusion faced by young people with autism, reflecting on the role of the school and community in ensuring that every student, no matter their ability level, has a chance to reach their potential.

Join our facilitator, Australian journalist, author, and radio and television presenter, Virginia Trioli, along with our panel of internationally acclaimed researchers who will explore the following questions to present a deeper understanding of the issues young people with autism experience during their schooling life:

  • What do we mean by inclusion?
  • Billions of dollars is invested in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Neurodevelopmental Disorders (NDD) research, where does this leave our children?
  • Why is inclusion still so hard to do?
  • After all these years, why are we still not satisfied with inclusion? What needs to change?

Our series of Global Critical Conversations welcomes a line-up of distinguished scholars, educators and industry representatives to share their insights and engage in dialogue focusing on the Monash Education Research priorities and in particular fostering fair and sustainable futures.
