Monash Master of Teaching in Secondary Education – Residency Program
Work-while-you-learn opportunity for aspiring secondary school teachers
Through the Monash Master of Teaching in Secondary Education Residency Program we are working to match a select number of Master of Teaching students with eligible government schools to support secondary school workforce shortages in particular locations and subject areas.
The program allows you to work within a school community as you complete your initial teacher education qualification. This program is being delivered in partnership with the Victorian Department of Education.
What is the residency program?
This opportunity is for students commencing our Master of Teaching in Secondary Education program in 2022. The coursework component of the Master of Teaching course will be offered through a combination of online, intensive and face to face learning. You will also complete a minimum of 60 days professional experience at the same host school. Placements will be completed weekly at your host school.
The program will start in January with the completion of a unit towards your Master of Teaching in Secondary Education course and a Professional Certificate of Education Support. This certificate enables you to take up a position as an Education Support Officer in a school and provides a stand-alone qualification and employment option. The duration of the residency program is 1.5 years full time (there is no part time option available). You can view the residency program structure on the Master of Teaching in Secondary Education course map.
Do I get paid?
As a part of this program, you will be eligible for payment for your work as an Education Support Officer. This is provided by your host school based on salary scales set by the Victorian Department of Education and Training (this won’t affect your Commonwealth Supported Place).
How many places are available?
There are up to 30 places available, and applicants who qualify for at least one of the following secondary teaching methods will be considered: Mathematics, Science, English, English as an Additional Language (EAL), or Languages. The program is only available to domestic students.
How do I apply?
To be considered for this program, you will need to submit a Round 1 application for either D60016 Master of Teaching in Secondary Education (2 years) or D60017 Master of Teaching in Secondary Education Accelerated (1.5 years). Applications open on 6 August 2021 and close on 24 September 2021. Applications received after this time will not be considered. If you meet the admissions requirements for the Master of Teaching in Secondary Education you will be issued with an offer letter in mid-October.
Once you have received an offer you’ll then have an opportunity to express interest in the Residency Program if you qualify for at least one of the following secondary teaching methods: Mathematics, Science, English, English as an Additional Language (EAL), or Languages. Selection into the Residency Program is competitive and will involve an interview with the host school. Successful applicants will be notified following the interview process and will be transferred into the D60018 Master of Teaching in Secondary Education Residency Program. The duration of the Residency Program will be 1.5 years full time.
If you are not successful in securing a place in the Residency Program, you will remain in either D60017 Master of Teaching in Secondary Education (2 years) or the D60017 Master of Teaching in Secondary Education Accelerated (1.5 years).
