Leading for Social Justice

In modern, complex communities schools and other educational settings play an important role in shaping social responses to a variety of ‘wicked problems’ that transcend institutions and influence our communities.

In this program you will explore a variety of ‘wicked problems’ through a social justice lens with the goal of making a difference. You will deepen your understanding of social justice theories, frameworks and practices of leading that can support your work in schools to make a difference in your communities. This will include exploring the ways that educational settings acknowledge or confront issues of diversity and difference, and as a leader you can shape transformative responses.

What you will learn

  • To consider the historical, contextual and political influences on social justice in schools and communities
  • The place of education in examining and responding to issues of social justice
  • How to encourage discussions that explore diversity and difference in your settings
  • How to draw on innovative and reflexive practices that identify and respond to complex social issues

Duration

Online program: Two hours per week over 4 weeks (8 hours total).
In weeks 1 and 3 you will engage in self-paced online learning; in weeks 2 and 4 you will attend one two-hour online workshop per week.
You will require internet access and a laptop, computer or other device that will enable you to join the virtual workshops and access an online learning portal. Your chosen device requires a camera, microphone and sound.

Prerequisites

This program is designed for current or aspiring leaders in educational settings including schools, early years, vocational and higher education organisations.

Recognition

This program references the following Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST): 1, 4 and 6. This program meets the standards at the Highly Accomplished or Lead level.

You will receive a Certificate of Completion from the Faculty of Education, Monash University.
