Professional Certificate of Restorative Justice

Creating and maintaining supportive and safe learning environments.

This program is about creating and maintaining safe learning environments and is designed for teachers, pre-service teachers and other educators. You will learn how to pro-actively create these environments while at the same time be responsive to incidents of harm and conflict that occur within these environments.

Teachers often name ‘classroom management’ as their most significant fear, and yet they have access to very few philosophical and practical tools with which to address this fear. This program provides educators with guidance on how to use a restorative approach to build strong relationships in classrooms and specific processes that aid teachers in working with students through incidents of harm and conflict.

Learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate enhanced professional knowledge and understanding of how to create and maintain supportive and safe learning environments.
  • Understand the philosophical, historical and ethical basis for various disciplinary and classroom management approaches, including restorative justice.
  • Use a range of strategies to support full student participation.
  • Apply practical understanding of the organisation of classroom activities and space.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of restorative justice as a response to conflict and/or harm and identify criticisms of this approach.
  • Apply restorative approaches within the classroom, both proactively and responsively.


Evening classes of three hours per week over 9 weeks.

Independent study: Participants will engage in readings and practical activities throughout the program.

There is no assessment associated with this course. Minimum class attendance is required.


This program is aligned with the following Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST): 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 7.

On successful completion of the program, you will receive a Certificate of Completion from the Faculty of Education, Monash University.
