Supporting Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder in Primary Schools

This workshop is designed for teachers and education support staff in Primary schools to help you develop a better understanding of underlying difficulties associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

In this workshop you will gain an understanding of the learning profile and needs of students with ASD, learn strategies to assist in their teaching and learning, as well as observe a real class in progress.

Topics covered

  • Diagnostic criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorder. The autistic continuum.
  • Learning characteristics and profile of students with ASD – “the culture of ASD”.
  • Sensory processing difficulties and co-morbid conditions.
  • Teaching strategies, including structured teaching – using physical structure, scheduling, visual structure and work systems, working to the student’s strengths and abilities.
  • Classroom observations at the school.

Course length

One half-day class of 3.5 hours.

No formal prerequisites. This program is designed for all teachers and integration aides /education support staff working in classrooms with students with ASD.


Class participation. The presenter will identify a variety of practical tasks during the course.


This course references the following Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST) 1.1, 1.6, 3.1, 4.1, 5.1, 5.4, 6.2, 6.3 and 6.4.

The Faculty of Education, Monash University will issue you with a Certificate of Completion.
