Monash student representing Australia at international space congresses
Engineering student Simon Clifford will represent Australia at both the Space Generation Congress and the International Astronautical Congress in Guadalajara, Mexico this month.
“I cannot properly describe how stoked I am to be given this opportunity - attending these events has been a dream of mine for some time now. Representing Australia at this international gathering is a huge privilege, and I hope that it will allow me to inspire others and further my contribution to the Australian aerospace industry,” he said.
Simon is a third year student at Monash University, where he is studying a double degree in Aerospace Engineering and Commerce.
Simon has always been fascinated by all things airborne, and fully realised this interest when he spent 9 months working as an intern at e-Go Aeroplanes in Cambridge, UK. E-Go specialises in high-tech microlight canard aircraft, built almost entirely out of advanced composites. During his time there, he witnessed the workings of the aerospace industry first hand - including watching the first flight of a newly designed aeroplane - and knew that this was an industry that he wanted to spend his life working in.
After attending the Aerospace Futures conference in his first year at university, he became involved in the Victorian branch of the Australian Youth Aerospace Association (AYAA).
Simon is also a member of the Monash Motorsport FSAE racing team, as he tries to gain as much practical engineering experience as he can. Once he graduates, Simon hopes to work in the space industry, where he plans to contribute to mankind’s efforts in space exploration.
The Space Generation Congress (SGC) is a three day event organised by the Space Generation Advisory Committee (SGAC), a United Nations-based organisation representing the views of the younger generation in the space industry. The International Astronautical Congress (IAC) is a large five day international gathering of members of the space industry and is organised by the International Astronautical Federation (IAF). For more information about the IAF and their annual conference, visit www.iafastro.com
