Welcome from the Dean
Most, if not all, of the grand challenges the world is facing today place Engineering at center-stage, an indispensable contributor to solutions for these challenges. In most cases, this involves invention and innovation, and Monash Engineering has developed, over the years, an outstanding track record of coming up with truly innovative solutions to the world’s biggest problems. From climate change to healthcare and from security to autonomous mobility, our world-renowned researchers and engineering educators shape the world that will be.
One of the largest and highest ranked Engineering Faculties worldwide, Monash Engineering graduates are nowadays leaders in industry and innovation worldwide; and technologies developed here have had a deep and lasting influence in many industries and sectors. The wealth of research expertise that can be found amongst our ranks spans the entire range of engineering and applied sciences, covering all the topics that are at the forefronts of innovation nowadays: from nanomanufacturing to healthcare engineering, and from decarbonisation to robotics, our research world-leading academics train the next generation of young minds, at the undergraduate, masters and PhD level, to build the world of tomorrow, a world that is sustainable, green and that puts the public good at the heart of technological progress and innovation.
Monash Engineering is the home of the Monash Student Teams, a unique blend of student initiatives, that routinely win competitions nationally and internationally and prepare our students for eminent careers in the most competitive industries world-wide. There is no stronger endorsement that boosts employability for engineering students than participation and leadership in the Monash Student Teams.
Operating in what are probably the best facilities for teaching and doing engineering research in the world, the Monash Engineering family, academics, highly specialised technical staff, professional experts, researchers and students work together to tackle the biggest problems of our times. Our reach goes way beyond Clayton, at the outskirts of Melbourne, where our main campus is: with strong engineering presence in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and in Suzhou, China, Monash projects the message of academic excellence for the public good in very emphatic terms, around the world.
We invite you to get in touch with us: prospective students, alumni, industry partners, current and future, we would love to hear from you. If you’re an alumnus, we welcome you to join us on LinkedIn at Engineering Alumni Monash University or contact our Alumni Engagement Team. The opportunities to interface with Monash Engineering are broad and exciting: we can provide networking opportunities, we can connect you to our student communities through initiatives such as our CO-OP program, our Industry Doctoral Program (IDP) and many others, and of course our professors will be delighted to connect and examine, together with you, ways that their research can be used in practice.
Let me close by reminding us that although engineering is the principal driver of our economy, in Australia, less than 13% of engineers are women. We are keen to encourage and inspire women and girls to choose engineering careers – we cannot win the game unless all our players are on the field. Monash University is proactively ensuring the future of engineering is world-leading, inclusive and diverse.
We look forward to hearing from you.
Very best regards,
Professor Yiannis Ventikos
Dean Faculty of Engineering
