Michael Durkin

Managing Director at GTA Consultants - Michael Durkin is a highly experienced transport planner and engineer, and Managing Director of GTA Consultants, Australia’s largest specialist transportation planning consultancy.

Michael was admitted to the degree of Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) (Honours) from Monash University in 1991. He commenced his professional engineering career with GTA Consultants - a newly established traffic planning start-up, joining as its first graduate. Over 25 years, Michael has played a central role in building GTA’s business to its current position - a growing firm of over 125 professional and support staff working across eight offices in six states and territories. GTA Consultants provides transport advisory services to the financiers, owners and operators of transport infrastructure around Australia, works on the biggest urban development projects in the country, and provides planning and policy advice to all three levels of government.

Throughout his career, Michael has gained vast experience in the industry, honing specialist skills in land use planning, strategic planning, traffic and transport planning for major events, expert testimony, master planning, subdivision planning, and car park planning, policy development and research. Michael has had specific responsibility for the delivery of a significant number of high profile projects, including the traffic and transport components of the Australian Formula One Grand Prix, the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games, Melbourne City Link, Southbank Boulevard (Melbourne) realignment and truncation, Lakeside Drive (Albert Park) Traffic Management, and Westfield Shopping Centre expansions throughout Australia.Since 2010, Michael has led GTA Consultants as Managing Director. In addition to overall day-to-day management responsibility of GTA’s business, Michael drives development and delivery of strategic growth initiatives for the company while also sitting on the GTA Board ofDirectors.

Michael is not only proud of what he has achieved in the engineering profession as a graduate from Monash University, but more importantly, takes pride in GTA’s employment of over one hundred engineering graduates through-out its history to date, many of which have been educated through Monash’s Department of Civil Engineering. A Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Australia (FIEAust), Michael also holds memberships with the Victorian Planning and Environmental Law Association, Australian Institute of Traffic Planning & Management and the Australian Institute of Company Directors.Michael is married with three children, enjoys keeping healthy and is an avid Richmond Tigers supporter.
