Civil engineer thrives in the corporate world
Not one to miss an opportunity, Dr Soon Teh (BCivEng 1982, PhD 1986) has crisscrossed Australia, Malaysia, Japan and the United States to build his wide-ranging corporate career. In doing so, he has explored digital transformation, cybersecurity and international business development.
Now in Melbourne, Soon is the International Sales and Channel Manager of 12d Solutions. The company develops technical software for the civil engineering, surveying and construction industries, specialising in products for engineering design and document management. “We’re the market leader in Australia and New Zealand,” says Soon. “Our products are used in over 70 countries worldwide.”
Soon has also taken on the role of Director of the cybersecurity firm Spreedbox, a company he co-founded. He describes their mission as “securing privacy in a connected world”. Spreedbox has created a device for secure and private instant messaging, audio/video chat and file sharing.
How did Soon get started? After completing his doctorate, he took a job at CEANET, providing technical support for engineering computing applications. Before long, he’d made his way there to Southern Region Director. This served as a springboard to many other opportunities, including a stint as CEO of IXLA, a publicly listed company developing digital imaging applications in Japan, Europe and North America.
Over the years, Soon has immersed himself in corporate life across the civil engineering, cybersecurity, e-learning and digital processing industries. He has functioned as a senior executive, consultant and founder of several start-ups and publicly listed technology companies around the world.
Soon also travels for pleasure, indulging his enthusiasm for photography. When he’s not globetrotting, he transports himself to the dance floor. He’s a self-identified ballroom dancer. The perfect counterpoint to his passion for technology!
