Christoph holds BE in Civil Engineering from Germany and wrote his final thesis on groundwater contamination flow at a major European airport. His PhD thesis then looked into the use of stream flow data for soil moisture predictions, which ultimately led me to work on satellite derived soil moisture products. At Meteo France and the French Space Agency (CNES),he developed and analysed frameworks for the assimilation of satellite data into land surface models. Upon returning to Australia he led the ground-components of four major airborne campaigns to central Australia and southern New South Wales for the validation of the European Space Agency’s Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission.

Since 2011, he has held  position as an academic at Monash, teaching into the 3rd year undergraduate and Masters streams.

His research focuses on the use of (primarily) remotely sensed data in environmental hazard and risk applications, as well as agriculture. He is particularly interested in the use of land surface parameters and their interactions for the prediction of extreme events, such as a droughts and wildfires.

Some of his recent projects include the validation of new satellite products (especially soil moisture), downscaling of low-resolution satellite products to more relevant spatial scales, studying the soil moisture and atmospheric temperature as drivers of bushfire risks, and the development of a more robust and stable drought index.

Some of his current projects include deriving vegetation properties from medium-resolution satellites for bushfire spread modelling, relating soil moisture to heatwaves and bushfire conditions, and monitoring the snowpack density in the Himalayas.

Outside of the satellite world, he is been coordinating the “Sensors Technologies” research group here at Monash, that is currently developing low-cost microsensor networks for environmental monitoring, looking into applications such as human thermal wellbeing and bushfire risk monitoring, but also to integrate them into a smart city framework.

Current projects

Validation of global water and energy balance monitoring in the Australian Murray-Darling Basing using GCOM-W1 data.

Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency funded research in support of the GCOM-W1 satellite and will continue to undertake validation of the AMSR2 soil moisture observations in the Murray-Darling basin of Australia and their subsequent use in land surface model evaluation.

Development of improved computational methods for bushfire prediction.

Airborne passive radiometer for high resolution soil moisture monitoring.

A passive multi-band soil moisture measuring radiometer at L-, Ku- and Ka-bands is proposed. The radiometer
comprises a 3-band shared aperture antenna array, a receiving electronics, a digital controller and a data logger.
The array antenna comprises dual polarised stacked patch elements to resonate at the three distinct bands.
Beamforming networks form agile beams to scan the ground. Sensitive radiometer receivers apply brightness
temperature downscaling for high resolution soil moisture data. The high resolution passive radiometer will
revolutionize the light aircraft airborne soil moisture monitoring by removing the mechanically steerable bulky and
heavy scan heads

MoistureMonitor: A multi-mission soil moisture monitoring system for a water limited future.

A long-term soil moisture record for Australia is critical to understanding climate change feedback mechanisms and their impacts on water management. This project will validate, downscale and harmonise soil moisture retrievals from three satellite missions across this decade, each using a new and different low resolution antenna technology and interpretation approach. Moisture Monitor, the framework to deliver this soil moisture record, will be verified using airborne campaigns and hydrological monitoring infrastructure in the Murrumbidgee catchment. Important outcomes will be validation of a new soil moisture satellite and development of a high resolution soil moisture product for improved land and water management and policy for Australia.

Catchment water balance and CO2 fluxes: a comparison between productive land uses.

Vegetation cover drives the water and carbon cycles at different spatial and temporal scales. This project uses a paired-catchment study in south western Victoria to understand and improve the management of productive lands by combining measurement techniques to accurately estimate the water and carbon balance in a pasture and blue gum plantation.

A multi-frequency microwave radiometer system for environmental research.

A new capability for airborne remote sensing of key environmental variables will be established. The unique
P-, Ku- and Ka-band passive microwave radiometer system will provide unprecedented information on soil
moisture, surface temperature, and vegetation, and allow for a new satellite concept to be demonstrated. By
combining with an existing L-band radiometer, data can be collected simultaneously at P-, L-, Ku- and Kabands,
with increased spatial resolutions accordingly. The idea being that the shorter wavelength but higher
spatial resolution data can be used to enhance the spatial resolution of the longer wavelength data, resulting
in a capability to derive long wavelength observations from space at unprecedented spatial resolution.
