Welcome from the Head

Mark Banaszak-Holl

Welcome to Chemical and Biological Engineering at Monash University. We are dedicated to training the next generation of Chemical Engineers to provide society with sustainable solutions for energy, food, water, all kinds of biological and chemical processing, and healthcare. As one of the world’s top chemical and biological engineering departments, we have an amazing set of colleagues in our teaching and learning community – especially our students – who are working to create a new, sustainable future.

We are particularly proud of our undergraduate program where you can study for a Bachelors of Engineering in Chemical Engineering, obtain a double degree combining Chemical Engineering with Arts, Biomedical Science, Communications, Law, or Pharmaceutical Science. We also have an accelerated pathway to a Bachelors of Chemical Engineering combined with a Masters of Biological Engineering. We also have the opportunity for engineering minors in cutting edge areas of chemical engineering including artificial intelligence, micro and nano technologies, smart manufacturing, and sustainable engineering.

Undergraduates have the opportunity to join a variety of Engineering student teams, use our Maker Spaces, and get involved with our new student-led Pilot Plant. Enjoy developing new ideas in a top research group during our yearlong research project and work on an industry-guided capstone design project for a sustainable plant that might deliver food, water, or energy supported by an experienced mentor team. While on campus, you may even be inspired to act on your ideas and become an entrepreneur, and we are here to provide support and guidance.

Our Masters of Professional Engineering and PhD program give you the opportunity for further study and to become a part of creating new knowledge and new processes for a sustainable new future. Monash Chemical and Biological Engineering is home to world-leading Centres and Institutes including the Monash Centre for Membrane Innovation (MCMI) and the Bioresource Processing Institute of Australia (BioPRIA). A summary of our available research projects provides a good overview of current research opportunities.

Chemical Engineering at Monash is the world’s most internationally engaged program. We have undergraduate programs in Melbourne, Australia and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia with the opportunity to take classes on both campuses. We have Masters and PhD programs in Melbourne, Kuala Lumpur, and Suzhou, China. International exchange programs can take you to the best universities in Asia, Europe, and North America. You cannot provide effective engineering solutions if you do not understand the culture context for which you are designing. At Monash, we will bring the international to you at all of our campuses – and help to get you out in the world.

Please get in touch to discuss joining us here at Monash Chemical and Biological Engineering as a student or to partner with us in teaching and research.

Best Regards,
