Kyle Carney completed a Bachelor of Aerospace Engineering and Bachelor of Science in 2010 and is now working as a Flying Officer in the Royal Australian Air Force.
“I have a passion for aircraft so I always knew I wanted to study aerospace engineering, but I have always had a strong interest in science too. Monash's excellent double degree program enabled me to follow both interests.”
Based in Williamstown, NSW, Kyle’s role involves many facets of maintenance of military jet aircraft.
“I am posted to a unit whose task is to provide engineering and logistics support to Australia’s fleet of F/A-18 Hornet multi-role fighters. I act as on-site representative embedded in a civilian contractor facility performing deeper level maintenance on aircraft. My role includes elements of project and contract management in a technical environment.”
During his undergraduate studies, Kyle was a member of the Monash University Formula SAE Team, an experience he found to be challenging and enriching.
“In addition to developing core engineering skills such as design, manufacture, and testing of technology, being involved with Monash Motorsport also helped me develop the essential skills of teamwork, project planning, communication and leadership.”
“Students need to understand that working in industry is not simply about ‘number crunching’ and that you should place high value on extra-curricular activities that allow you to develop and demonstrate valuable skills such as leadership, communication and teamwork. In industry you will rarely work by yourself and it doesn’t matter if you are the smartest engineer in the world, if you cannot work effectively with others, then you are of little value to a company. Luckily, Monash provides a plethora of opportunities to gain and enhance these skills such as Formula SAE, Monash Engineering Students Society, Leadership in a Technological Environment program, and other programs.”
