STEMM Women Academic Network

The demand for formal networking opportunities has emerged repeatedly over the years and has been recognised by many as critical to academic success. In particular, early-mid-career researchers and postdoctoral staff in STEMM spoke about the value of having a women-only network to make connections with colleagues in other departments, having a platform to make their voices heard and a source of support.

In response to this feedback, the Athena SWAN Committee developed an action item to establish  "STEMM Women Academic Network" (SWAN) with the aim of facilitating network and mentoring opportunities within Monash University.

The inaugural network chair is Professor Maria Garcia De La Banda (Faculty of Information Technology).

STEP ONE: Visioning Workshop

To help us define the network's goals, areas of focus and priorities, we hosted a "Strategy Workshop" on 14 October 2019, facilitated by Wendy Lungaard from Win Win Workplace Strategies. Two representatives from each STEMM faculty were invited to participate in the discussion and provide input on what role the network should fulfil to ensure it is useful and capable of responding to the needs of academic women at Monash.
