If you've just arrived in Melbourne from overseas, there's a lot to learn when starting uni - not to mention finding a place to live and getting accustomed to Australian culture. However, here at Monash we have plenty of support services to help you as you settle into your new life.
A good place to start is to get connected to other new students on our New to Monash 2017 Facebook group. It's a great way to meet other people and get some tips about preparing for uni.
Monash Connect is our student service centre, which can assist or direct you to appropriate service for just about anything at Monash. This is the place to go if you have questions about your student visa, electronic confirmation of enrolment (eCOE) or the international student transport concession pass (for undergraduates).
Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)
If you're here on a student visa, you need to arrange health cover. If you're with Allianz Global Assistance, you can manage your health cover using My OSHC Assistant app.
Don't forget to order your membership card soon after you arrive or access your membership using the app.
Advisers from Allianz Global Assistance can assist if you have questions. You can find them at Monash Connect at Caulfield and Clayton - see the website for dates and times.
If you're wanting to improve your conversational English skills, we have a range of programs to help. Some are run by trained students who understand that the Australian lingo is not always easy to understand. You'll learn conversation starters, how to address people, and other useful tips about Australian customs, all while building vocabulary and practising your pronunciation. There's no assessment, homework or books and in the Let's Chat program, everyone gets a chance to chat each session. For all the details, see English Connect.
Download a copy of Destination Monash (pdf, 1.72 mb) – a handbook for international students.
For our Muslim students, we have a useful handbook called Salaam Monash, a really helpful introduction if you're new to Melbourne.
Under 18 students
Soon after enrolment, the International Student Engagement team will contact you to set up a meeting. If you have any questions about your accommodation or guardians, feel free to email us at firstname.lastname@example.org
If you plan to change your accommodation or caregiver arrangements, you will need to get approval. See under 18s changing arrangements.
Look out for the International student newsletter - we'll email this to your Monash account during week one. This online newsletter keeps you informed of services and events on campus, in the community, and from your campus international student organisation.
