Monash University has honoured the generosity of those who make bequests to the University with the launch of The Matheson Society.
The Matheson Society was launched at a special event yesterday hosted by Monash University President and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Margaret Gardner AO, to recognise staff, alumni and other supporters who have confirmed their intention to include a gift to the University in their will. They were invited to become a member of The Matheson Society.
Professor Gardner said the generosity of philanthropic donations to the University went beyond just financial impacts, supporting vital University initiatives including student scholarships and research.
“It’s a privilege to acknowledge our supporters who have made the generous decision to leave a gift in their will to Monash to support our future leaders, solutions and communities,” Professor Gardner said.
“Their contributions provide vital support to our students on their path to become tomorrow’s leaders and to our world-leading research, further benefitting and the communities we serve.
“Our hope is that over time the Bequest Society itself will become a strong and closely connected community, with regular society events and enduring friendships formed between alumni, staff and friends of Monash University.”
Student scholarships are the most popular area of support among Monash University bequestors, with many supporting scholarships that benefit disadvantaged students.
The Matheson Society is named in honour of Monash University’s first Vice-Chancellor, Sir Louis Matheson, and his wife Lady Audrey Matheson. Together their hard work and dedication led the rapid development of Monash University in its earliest years.
“Sir Louis Matheson and Lady Matheson are remembered fondly by alumni for their passion and dedication. Together their enduring legacy has contributed to the Monash University we know today, recognised internationally for excellence in research and teaching,” Professor Gardner said.
Today their son Roger Matheson represented the family, speaking about his parents’ passion in establishing a strong and vibrant community at Monash University.
