PhD internships help industry and government to engage with the research community in order to discover new opportunities and solve complex problems.
Monash has partnered with AMSI Intern to ensure internships are simple, effective and rewarding for everyone involved.
PhD students in fields ranging from science and engineering through to economics and marketing are placed with an organisation for 4-5 months.
Intellectual property remains with the business while issues such as administration and insurance are taken care of in a timely manner.
In 2013, Monash PhD student Andrew Cookson completed an AMSI internship with Grey Innovation, an engineering technology commercialisation company.
The internship enabled Andrew to combine his interests in mathematics and psychology by contributing to the development of a health-related product.
"I worked on a project where a tablet game was being used by psychologists to try and improve the attention levels of children with developmental delay disorders. My role was to analyse and present the input data to ensure it was understandable and useful, ensuring the tool is developed in a way that best supports the child's progress", he said.
Not only did the project clarify his interests and become the basis for his PhD studies, but Andrew sees longer-term benefits as well.
"As I look forward to completing my PhD, I can see that the AMSI internship has provided me with a pathway into industry, helped me develop a professional network and will open a lot of doors after I graduate", he says.
Professor Kate Smith-Miles who served as Andrew's academic mentor for the internship has also experienced broader benefits from the program.
"The benefits of the partnership between Monash and AMSI include opportunities to discover industry partners with interesting research questions. The internship provides a foot-in-the-door to get to know the company and their research problems. I have had previous internships that have led to ARC Linkage grants to explore longer term research challenges that we identified in the internship", she said.
The AMSI Internship Program is just one way that Monash seeks to provide interesting and meaningful opportunities for graduate researchers, and engage with external organisations to ensure broader impact.
