By Aunty Diane Singh - Elder in Residence

For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples throughout the country, NAIDOC Week is a very important event on the Indigenous calendar.

It is a time when we as Indigenous Australians can come together as a community to celebrate our survival by reflecting on our past and the struggles endured by those who have gone on before us and and thinking about our future.

As an Indigenous elder, NAIDOC offers me the opportunity to reminisce on the early days enjoyed with family and friends; the weeks of fundraising for the annual ball at the Northcote Town Hall.

I also acknowledge the sad times and those people, Indigenous and non-Indigenous, who were with us from the beginning, who walked and fought for our people in our struggles to survive and who I truly believe are still with us in spirit today.
