Staff Spotlight: Mark Austin

My name is Mark Austin and I am the new Student Services Officer. My Aboriginal heritage is the Gunditjmara of South Western Victoria though I grew up in the South eastern suburbs of Melbourne on Boonwurrung country.

For the past six years I was working as a painter abseiler. It was an exciting job with many amazing views but I knew I couldn’t do it forever. Before this I was a graduate at the Victorian Public Service working in the Department of Health and Human Services and also with the Department of Justice. I studied at Melbourne University where I completed a Bachelors of Commerce and Law.

Undertaking the role of Indigenous Student Services Officer, supporting the academic success of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students at Monash has been greatly fulfilling. With the Campus’ coming back to life after COVID lockdowns it’s great to meet and support so many vibrant and academically gifted students. It is an honour to support our future leaders in our community.

Being a past university student myself I understand the daunting experience it can be at times. I am excited to be able to support our students in their journey through University and encourage them to make the most out of the great opportunities they will come across.
