Dr Matthew Butler

Matt is a Senior Lecturer and researcher within the Faculty of Information Technology. His research interests lay in three primary areas:

  • Addressing Challenges in Computing Education
  • The Use of New Technologies in the Educational Context
  • Improving Accessible Graphics for the Vision Impaired Community

Matt's PhD focused on investigating student learning issues in programming and was awarded the Faculty of Information Technology Doctoral Medal for best PhD thesis in 2010. Since then he has continued to focus on initiatives to improve the student experience, including an Australian Council of Deans in ICT funded national study reporting on the experiences of first year ICT students.

Matt is also part of a team working on improving the provision of accessible graphics for vision impaired students. This OLT funded project investigates both improvements to process, and also how emerging technologies can be used to create new types of accessible graphics. Technologies such as 3D printing and low-cost electronics have the potential to provide new types of accessible graphics more quickly and with the ability to create new meaningful user experiences that can improve the educational experience.
