The UN Climate Change Conference (also known as the “Conferences of the Parties”, or COP) is the main annual meeting of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Each year, the 197 governments that are Parties to the UNFCCC gather to hold diplomatic discussions and negotiate on all aspects of the global climate response, with the current focus being the implementation of the Paris Agreement. These conferences also have a huge program of side events on every aspect of climate change and attract tens of thousands of government negotiators, climate change experts and activists.

Monash has been sending an annual delegation of staff and students from across the university to the COP meetings since 2016. Our delegation to COP24 in Poland last year was the largest and most active delegation to date, with the University’s Net Zero Initiative awarded a UN Momentum for Change award during the event. It had broad representation from across the university, including from key centres and institutions such as ClimateWorks Australia, the Monash Energy Materials Systems Institute, the Monash Climate Change Communication Research Hub, and the Net Zero team.

COP25 will take place in Santiago, Chile, 2-13 December 2019. The Monash Sustainable Development Institute (MSDI) and Global Engagement are currently working in collaboration with key stakeholders and alumni of previous COPs to plan Monash’s delegation to this conference. COPs are enormous events that require both combined and individual  preparation to realise the many fantastic opportunities they present for Monash.

Monash staff and graduate students who are interested in joining the delegation are invited to submit an Expression of Interest via this form. The deadline for submissions is COB Wednesday 21 August.

Please note that delegates will have to cover their own funding for the trip and make their own travel arrangements. (Some accommodation has been pre-booked to enable the delegation to stay together as far as possible).

The number of places available on the delegation will depend on how many badges the UNFCCC allocates to Monash. Applicants who have specific activities they plan to undertake at the conference, or whose work, research or study has strong relevance to climate change policy and action, will be prioritised in the selection.

Delegates will be expected to assist with delegation preparations ahead of COP (such as preparation of communication materials) and activities during the conference (such as staffing a Monash booth). Delegates will be expected to devote time ahead of the conference to understanding how COPs work, identifying and linking to stakeholders that they want to connect to, and looking for opportunities to participate (such as presenting on a panel).
