COP 24

EOIs welcome for Monash delegation to COP24

This December, Monash will send its third delegation to the annual UN Climate Change Conference. The 2018 conference, also known as COP24, will take place in Katowice, Poland, on 3 to 14 December 2018. A limited number of places may be available on the delegation, and interested staff and graduate students are now welcome to put in an Expression of Interest for those places. The deadline for EOIs is COB Thursday 20 September.

The UN Climate Change Conference (also known as the “Conferences of the Parties”, or COP) is the main annual meeting of theUnited Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Each year, the 197 governments that are Parties to the UNFCCC gather to hold diplomatic discussions and negotiate on all aspects of the global climate response, with the current focus being the implementation of theParis Agreement. These conferences also have a huge program of side events on every aspect of climate change and attract tens of thousands of experts and activists.

Monash became a UNFCCC Observer Organisation in 2016 and has sent delegations to the 2016 conference in Marrakech, Morocco (COP22) and the 2017 conference in Bonn, Germany (COP23).

The 2018 conference, or COP24, will take place in Katowice, Poland, on 3 to 14 December 2018. The Monash Sustainable Development Institute (MSDI) and Global Engagement are currently working with a range of climate change stakeholders and COP alumni from across the University to plan Monash’s delegation to this conference.

The focus of this year’s delegation will be to showcase Monash’s world-leading Net Zero Initiative, as well as to strengthen and showcase Monash as a global leader in advancing climate change action more generally.

Depending on how many tickets the UNFCCC allocates to Monash, additional places may be available for other Monash staff and graduate students who are interested in joining the delegation. In particular, staff and students who have specific activities they plan to undertake at the conference, or whose work, research or study has strong relevance to climate change policy and action, will be prioritised in the selection.

Please note that delegates will have to cover their own funding for the trip and will be expected to assist with delegation activities, such as staffing a Monash exhibit.

To express your interest in the Monash delegation to COP24, please complete and submit the EOI form by close of business on Thursday 20 September.
