Monash appoints Interim Dean for the Faculty of IT
As the departure of Professor Jon Whittle, Dean of the Faculty of IT approaches, Monash is proud to announce Professor Ann Nicholson as Interim Dean from 25 July 2020.
An internationally-recognised researcher and innovative educator, Professor Nicholson has served in several leadership roles in the faculty, including Deputy Dean and Associate Dean (Education). She is also well known for her research in artificial intelligence (AI) with a focus on Bayesian Networks.
Throughout her career, Professor Nicholson has published more than 100 peer-reviewed papers, co-authored the acclaimed book Bayesian Artificial Intelligence – and attracted more than $12 million in research funding.
During her time at Monash, Professor Nicholson has also led and contributed extensively to the faculty’s mission ‘IT for Social Good’.
One of her many notable projects, Professor Nicholson is currently using AI technologies to help Ambulance Victoria more efficiently identify whether emergency calls are about cardiac arrest. This is expected to fast track critical care and save an estimated 185 lives every year. She is also supporting the University’s involvement in RACE for 2030 – a cross-faculty, cross-institutional project to deliver cleaner, more reliable energy across Australia.
‘The positive impact we’re having on thousands of lives is a constant reminder of our higher purpose. As we emerge from lockdown and return to campus, we can expect new challenges as well as opportunities.’ said Professor Nicholson.
As Interim Dean, Professor Nicholson will further the faculty’s ambitious agenda. She will also build on the faculty’s educational transformation, which will focus on innovative curricula and pedagogy to produce graduates who are fully-prepared to thrive in a post-pandemic world.
‘Thank you to Professor Jon Whittle for his leadership over the past three years. He has set us on a trajectory for change and excellence – and I’m delighted to move our strategy forward.’ continued Professor Nicholson.
