Professor Jianfei Cai named 2021 IEEE Fellow

Professor Jianfei Cai, Head of the Department of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence in the Faculty of Information Technology at Monash University, has been named a Fellow by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) for his contributions to multimedia transmission and content analysis.

“To be recognised by the world's leaders in technology for this fellowship is a great honour and one that I am incredibly proud to receive,” shared Professor Cai.

The IEEE is the world’s leading professional association for advancing technology for humanity. Through its 400,000 plus members in 160 countries, the association is a leading authority on a wide variety of areas ranging from aerospace systems, computers and telecommunications to biomedical engineering, electric power and consumer electronics.

The IEEE Fellow is the highest grade of membership and is recognised by the technical community as a prestigious honor and an important career achievement. This distinction is reserved for select IEEE members with extraordinary accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest.

Professor Cai has made extraordinary technical contributions and generated profound impact to the areas of multimedia, as evidenced by his 200 plus research publications, 8,300 plus citations and Google Scholar H-index of 46.

He is well known for his early contribution to multimedia transmission, where he laid out several first theoretical foundations for joint optimization for wireless video communication. He has also contributed distinctively to the advancement of multimedia content analysis, an important and challenging area with ample applications. He is among the few who have widened the path to process and understand multimedia contents beyond media themselves by leveraging prior information and side information from other modalities, which is regarded as a fundamental paradigm shift.

The distinctive contributions Professor Cai has made in multimedia have dramatically advanced the state of the art, inspired thousands of follow-up works by fellow researchers and generated a lasting impact to the field.

“On behalf of the University and the Faculty, I would like to congratulate Professor Jianfei on this outstanding and very well deserved achievement. His research contributions have not only significantly advanced multimedia technology, but also made a real impact in our society, becoming an integral part of our modern life and work.” said Deputy Dean (Research) in the Faculty of IT, Professor Maria Garcia de la Banda.

The IEEE Fellows will be elevated as of January 2021.
