45 years of CLE in South Africa: Transforming the curriculum
Significant progress in clinical legal education (CLE) was made in South Africa since 2000. The period 2015 – 2017 witnessed student protests, calling for, amongst other things, the transformation and decolonisation of universities and curricula. The cultural diversity in the composition of students, staff and clinic clients aids in the current challenge of introducing a decolonised CLE curriculum. Although the teaching of black-letter law will remain at the core, the skills-based application of the law will be demonstrated in the clinic, where aspects reflecting a colonial culture can be addressed. These ongoing processes, comprising clinical restructuring and pedagogy will be discussed.
