Advocacy in clinical legal education: presenting real life cases in real life tribunals

Coventry University Law School works in partnership with a local charity, Central England Law Centre, delivering clinical legal education. This partnership provides students with the opportunity to develop legal skills in a professional legal environment. In November 2017, the partnership launched the ‘advocacy programme’, where students present cases in the social entitlement tribunal before a judge and doctor.

This paper will analyse the impact of the advocacy programme as a teaching method to develop legal skills. Through mixed methods it will analyse the responses from students taking part in the programme to evaluate its impact on learning and to evaluate how students prepare for inquisitorial proceedings.
