Sue Schechter is the Field Placement Director, Faculty co-Director of the Pro Bono Program, and Lecturer-in-Residence at the UC Berkeley School of Law. As the Field Placement Director, Sue oversees between 65 and 85 students per semester along with developing and teaching the accompanying classroom components to field placements and judicial externships. She has worked with law students for over 25 years through positions in career development, student services, and experiential education, and through nonprofits that support students pursuing public interest- and public service-based careers. Currently, Sue serves as the national co-chair of the AALS Externships Committee and helps to manage the Remote and Long-Distance Placement Subcommittee. Sue is a founding member of BACE, the Bay Area Consortium on Externships and currently serves in a leadership role to facilitate collaboration amongst Northern California’s law schools. She notably presents about and writes on student supervision at the local, regional, national, and international levels. At Berkeley Law, Sue is active on the Law School’s faculty/staff Climate Committee, the Public Interest Working Group, and the Public Interest Placement Committee. She generally aims to ensure that all students are provided with ample opportunities to explore experiential learning and launch their careers.
