The Cherbourg-QUT Project: A model for Legal Clinics to engage with Aboriginal Communities

QUT has worked in partnership with the Cherbourg Aboriginal Community on a range of transdisciplinary student projects for the past 6 years.

Examples of student projects include the development of a Youth Council, successful grant funding for the establishment of a local Indigenous Knowledges Centre, and review of the Shire Council’s regulations.

This Project is an example of a sustainable and genuine partnership between a university and an Aboriginal community. This paper will consider protocols and procedures we have identified for working with the Cherbourg community; the model and training provided to students and staff undertaking the project; and the challenges and benefits of this partnership.
