Commercial CPD Seminar

Throughout 2019, the Faculty of Law, in conjunction with the Supreme Court of Victoria, Victorian Bar, Commercial Bar and Judicial College of Victoria, held seminars covering current commercial law topics. The seminars will be of interest to the legal fraternity, students and the general public.

Technological Innovation and Commercial Law

Blockchain, bitcoin and smart contracts: no longer buzzwords, these technologies are reshaping societies — and legal landscapes. But the impact these emerging technologies will have is difficult to predict. The first Commercial Court CPD Seminar of 2019 will serve as an introduction to these innovations in legal and financial technology (or “fintech”) and forecast some of the opportunities and challenges such advances may present to commercial practitioners and their clients.

Privacy law in an era of disruption

With no statutory or common law tort for invasion of privacy in Australia, this session will explore current privacy protections and causes of action in legislation and common law.

It will also discuss law reform proposals to improve redress, such as a statutory tort and strengthened protections under existing privacy legislation, as most recently recommended by the ACCC's Digital Platforms Report.

Our panel will also highlight the growing tension between rapidly evolving technology and current notions of privacy.

The Honourable Justice Melinda Richards
