CEED

Supporting our staff to develop their potential as educators, researchers and leaders in their field, is key to the goals of embedding Learning and Teaching at Monash.

Through our CEED modules, you are encouraged to explore your teaching practice in innovative and collaborative ways. We hope to support you in discovering new ways to motivate and inspire your students, and experience how effective use of technology can facilitate learning.

CEED modules have been developed to support:

  • academics new to Monash University
  • continuing and fixed-term academic staff
  • teaching associates (sessional tutors, demonstrators and casual academics)
  • professional staff engaged in learning and teaching
  • graduate researchers who teach.

Following the review of CEED in 2017, the requirement for professional development from 2018 is one CEED module per annum. In semester 2, we are offering a suite of 14 modules commencing in June.

Mandatory for all new academics to Monash - Foundations for Effective Teaching.

CEED Themes

Building on the core foundations program is a suite of modules linked to each of the CEED themes. The CEED modules have been designed to be flexible and practice-based with pedagogical underpinning. Modules are available in onlilne and blended learning modes, and require a time commitment of approximately six hours. In the case of online modules, these can be completed at your own pace within a 60-day period. As well as the face-to-face session, the blended modules will have elements of pre- and post-class activity which can be completed more flexibly before and after the face-to-face interaction.

To ensure our staff continue to develop their potential as excellent educators, engagement in CEED is part of annual professional development (PD). From 2018, all academics will undertake one module per year.

Teaching and assessment

This theme will focus on important pedagogical practices that enhance the student learning experience in the ever changing context of higher education.

Curriculum design

This theme will help to enable academics to effectively design courses and units that are constructively aligned within institutional guidelines and responsive to student and peer feedback, in a globalised context.

Technology and space

This theme aims to develop academics’ capacity to effectively exploit technological advancements and contemporary learning spaces driven by pedagogical principles to enhance the student learning experience.

Student empowerment

This theme will broaden academics’ perspectives on strategies and approaches to empower students in a changing global environment.

Scholarship of teaching and learning

This theme will engage academics in the scholarship of teaching and learning (SOTL) community, in the reflection on their practices, evaluation, and seeking of feedback, so as to strengthen the research – teaching nexus throughout the university.

Leadership, mentoring and recognition

This theme will nurture in academics the potential to lead with integrity, communicate perceptively, and develop a strong and supportive leadership style.

Maximising sessional teaching outcomes

This theme will analyse important pedagogical elements of student learning experiences and consider ways a sessional teaching associate can enrich these. Modules in this theme will be relevant for teaching associates (employed on a casual, short-term contract or sessional basis), and Graduate Researchers enrolled in the Monash Doctoral Program.
