Giving feedback on students’ academic writing

Overview

The module will provide participants with the tools for targeted feedback to students about their academic writing. It will teach participants to recognise important writing challenges experienced by students, and to increase students’ sense of confidence as writers. To learn where to target their feedback, participants will work through a framework consisting of eight components: clarity, accuracy, coherence/cohesion, emphasis, criticality, engagement, conciseness, and strategy.

As they engage with each component, participants will refine their conceptual vocabulary and gain new strategies to provide feedback on students’ writing, and to target solutions. The module draws on authentic examples of students’ writing problem-based learning and uses these to apply feedback skills.
