Professor Frank Smolenaers
Frank Smolenaers is an adjunct Professor (Research) with the Design Health Collab at Monash University and has forged a reciprocal relationship exploring design interventions to improve healthcare, creating prototypes and conducting in-situ activities in the Health Innovation Centre at the Alfred, where Frank is also the Director of Technology.
With over 38 years in Victorian public health, Frank has worked in many rural and metro public hospitals as well as secondment to the Department of Human Services. Frank strives to provide safe, sustainable and fit for purpose Digital Health solutions to primary and tertiary healthcare, together with industry and universities across ANZ, and has been a mentor at various Health Hack-a-thons.
From an initial 15 year career in Pathology and research as a Medical Microbiologist, Frank has moved through the ranks in Information Services support and delivery to roles such as upper management of departments and strategic (multi-million dollar) health service wide digital projects.
His long term substantive role is a Digital Health Consultant, Researcher, Educator, Infrastructure and end user Solution Architect, at the Alfred Hospital “Centre for Health Innovation. Frank designed, built and operationalised the Digital Health Service stream, of this $13m mock hospital and Digital Health Design Lab, to improve uptake and safety of solutions through new technology development, end user testing, patient/clinician centred design, trialling, experiential demonstration, usability testing and end user acceptance testing. The resulted “Simulated Health System” proving invaluable in the co-design of new, integrated solutions to meet clinician workflow and patient safety needs.
Frank is also the course coordinator and casual Lecturer in eHealth Infrastructure, and a Research Fellow, in the Centre for Digital Transformation of Health at The University of Melbourne. He consults as required for research projects at both Monash University and the University of Melbourne, contributing to, if not designing bespoke solutions when required.
