Laura Harper, The Urbanism of Material
The Urbanism of Material explores how the small and large are connected in the urban environment – how a construction detail relates to the city. This work comprises the practical component of Laura Harper’s PhD research.
The work includes both research and design ranging in scope and scale from analysis of geomorphology to construction details for door handles; from the study of urban morphology in Victorian towns to the design for new bluestone buildings using robotic processing. The research reveals systems that exist in urban environments and which connect the logic of construction on an individual building or site with the collective logic of urban organisation. The work suggests an approach to designing for the urban environment which is both specific and systemic, beginning with details, buildings, construction systems and sites, and understanding the cumulative a ect of these parts on the wider urban environment.
