Strategic Performance of Resistance

Can street theatre topple a dictatorship? Can humour trump fear and police repression? Can a group of twelve university students perform themselves into a powerful movement which has helped bring democracy to their people? This is the story of Otpor!, an activist group that provided a blueprint for global youth movements of the 21st-century. I look back at the bloody breakup of the country I was born in, Yugoslavia, and the way performance was used both to allow an authoritarian Slobodan Milošević to rise to power and the youth movement to bring him down.
