Monash PhD in Design: XYX Lab

The MADA XYX Lab produces knowledge about how space and design shape the causes, consequences and approaches to understanding, controlling and preventing gender inequity in Australia.

We seek applications from international candidates with a background in design research or related discipline. The PhD will work under the supervision of Dr Nicole Kalms and Professor Naomi Stead as part of a larger project around challenges to the safety of women in public transport places. Within the context of global urbanisation and shifting gender roles, proactive design strategies for an inclusive future of public transport become increasingly important. This project examines public transport space (via case study analysis) through the experiences of women with the aim to reduce risk and fear. This will be achieved through a proactive approach that shifts the responsibility of safety away from victims, towards prevention of sexual violence through strategic spatial design.

Closing date for receipt of EOI’s: Monday, 17 September 2018, 11:55 pm AEST
