This PhD research investigates how poetic documentary and visual anthropology evokes their lives by representing not just the issues but also the context within which they occur. These lives have the same colour and movement, sound and texture that we all experience, but too often intellectual disability is presented on screen (if it appears at all) as a tragedy to be lamented or an obstacle to be overcome.

This multimedia installation uses the techniques of poetic documentary by emphasising line, shape, colour, texture, rhythm, accent and phrasing. It incorporates facets of visual anthropology by situating their stories in a domestic environment that speaks of family history and traditions. The aim is to both celebrate the achievements of a person with an intellectual disability and evoke their social lives beyond the disability.
