Examining photography’s importance in the public sphere.
MADA Researcher Dr Melissa Miles has been awarded a Future Fellowship by the Australian Research Council. The prestigious ARC Future Fellowship scheme supports outstanding mid-career researchers in areas of critical national importance.
Melissa’s four year project reveals how photography fosters identification with others and provides an empowering means for marginalized groups to become involved in how the public is addressed, seen and represented.
A particular focus of this project is how the increasing focus on testimony and witness in contemporary culture has recently altered the way that photography operates in public, and raised some significant problems for photography historians regarding the representation of events, others and histories. This innovative research program will respond to these problems, and produce a brand new understanding of the historical, social, cultural and political links between photography and the public sphere today.
