How home can be read through the combination of memory and suggestive imagery.
Home and its relation to memory occupy an important area to the understanding of place and belonging, but also to the imagination of the experience of home and what it could be.
Through an interactive interface utilising the Library at The Dock touch screens, Memory Room offers an interactive tool that allows visitors to respond in real time by selecting five emotive images or words from a set of fifty created by the designer. From their selections, a three dimensional image of a room is generated.
Memory Room also prompts the user to write a short narrative about their generated room. In doing so, this project seeks to build a conversation about home as a genre of storytelling, to broaden the scope of how memories attached to the familiar, yet uncanny landscape of home are described, and to create a sense of inclusion as boundaries between people and place merge on a shared public platform.
The user-generated rooms and stories are captured as a digital archive and made viewable on the touch screens at The Dock along with an infographic that generates in real time the users country of origin, age, and gender as way to showcase the diversity of Melbourne.
