Prato Italy

Bachelor of Architectural Design
Semester 1, 2022

Studio leader(s)

The Prato study tour will be examining the historical and contemporary form and use of industrial architecture. Italy is: 1) renown for its design and manufacture of an array of goods, from luxury items, to cars, to food stuffs; and 2) has successfully drawn on its strengths in design and other creative industries to renew the industrial urban areas in its towns and cities. We will be undertaken a series of site visits and case studies to explore the spatial strategies that have been used to support this evolution in Italy.

3501 Made in Italy: The study tour will provide students with a unique opportunity to visit a series of 20C industrial buildings, contemporary adaptive re-use projects and a range of exhibition / showroom / making spaces. Field work will involve photo and sketch documentation of selected case studies (human + machine occupations, building typologies and sites), the urban contexts where they reside and the hard/soft infrastructures that support them.

3502 Industrious future: Drawing on the lessons learned from the case studies, students will undertake a 2-week design intensive working out of the Monash Prato Centre. Design experiments will explore and demonstrate the spatial, technological and social potentials of future industrial change.

Expression of Interest (EOI)

Places are limited and very competitive. The programme will suit students with a strong curiosity for urban change, enjoy exploring and walking the city, enjoy being part of hard-working teams, and have an interest in technological / production processes. To be considered for this programme, you will be required to submit an EOI, answering questions about your interest in the unit and providing one A4 page of example(s) of your work (sketches, photography, drawings and/or installations). See Moodle for link.

Some preparatory work will be required in Melbourne prior to leaving.
