Silent Aspiration
My practice extends from the lineages of conceptual art and the potential of an imagination yielded by language. Embracing the polysemic possibilities of the word ‘aspiration’ as a conceptual hinge, this research project explores the image of an ‘aspirational body’.
Aspiration has two common meanings. First, as a word that suggests hope, ambition and a striving for economic betterment. Second, as a term for breathing; used in reference to a condition of respiratory distress, where food or fluids are involuntarily breathed into the lungs.
An exhibition of video artworks and sculpture, Silent Aspiration responds to economic and respiratory disruptions, moments of disordered consumption and stories of objects “going the wrong way”. It explores the indeterminate image of an object’s insides, and our ability to look beyond the surface of nontransparent things.
