Katherine Botten
Katherine Botten is an artist and writer living in Melbourne. Generating value from damage through the mechanisms of art production, it is a question of the work if participating in that system could offer freedom or transcendence beyond its co-dependence on an inspiring trauma. Her MFA thesis “Spiritual Povera” uses R.D. Laing’s book ‘The Divided Self’ (1970) as guide, in a 3700+ page document, simultaneously an exegesis and an artwork in-and-of-itself. The term “Spiritual Povera” embodies both too much abject-life in the work, and too little distance from reified capitalism.
