Semaphoria is a ‘distributed interior’ that addresses loss and displacement where rising sea levels degrade a remote Alaskan community, forcing township transfer and the abandonment of critical cultural moments. The project identifies important landmarks and social relations from the community of Newtok; and provides ongoing interaction with these memories and objects in situ by marking out shared boundaries, thresholds, and points of observation. Journeys, reflections, and ongoing monitoring create collective interiors across a degrading landscape. Semaphoria maintains connection to cultural identity within inundated terrains, and signals new interactions for visitors and observers through a re-imagined response to escalating flood conditions.
