How to draw Simple Farnsworth House in Sketchup

Digital Modelling is an important aspect of designing. For those people who are new to Sketchup, this tutorial will teach the basics of how to model a simple representation of the Farnsworth House using SketchUp, in addition to some helpful tips to make the modelling process much quicker and easier. In this tutorial you will learn to use:

  • Line& Rectangle Tools
  • Extrude Tool
  • Grouping Elements
  • Move/Copy
  • Applying Materials

The image below will be used to determine the dimensions of the house. It is available for download at: https://www.pinterest.com.au/pin/158540849359700205/?lp=true

Set your Drawing Dimensions

  • Open up Sketchup – Chose a template (Any simple templates) - Click start using Sketchup
  • For this tutorial we are using millimetres - changing units (If your Sketchup dimensions are not in mm)
  • Window- Model Info- Units- Change format into Decimal millimetres (mm)

Drawing the Open Terrace

  1. Use Line tool (Type l)  - align line to red axis- type (16970)- align line to green axis- type (6970)
Alternatively, use the Rectangle tool (type R)- Click on the origin (0, 0)- type (16970, 6970)
  2. Use Extrude tool  in the tool bar – type (400)
  3. Use the Select tool -Triple click to select the object- right click- Make Group
(This will make this whole thing as a group so it will not stick to other groups in the future)
  4. Use the Select tool -click on the group to select it- use Move tool  in tool bar- select a point on the group- align with the blue axis- type (200)

Drawing the Covered Space

  1. To get the end point of the covered space correct we must use line to draw a reference point

Use Line tool (Type l)  - click on the top left endpoint of the open terrace group- Align on edge in group- type the length (6710) refer to image for dimensions.

  2. Use the Rectangle tool (type R) - Click on the end point – type the length and width (23680, 8340) refer to image for dimensions
  3. Use the Select tool -delete the reference line drawn in step 2
  4. Use Extrude tool in the tool bar – type (400)
  5. Use the Select tool -triple click to select the object- right click- Make Group
(Note this group can be freely moved around without sticking to the previous group)
  6. Click on the group to select it- use Move tool in tool bar- select a point on the group- align with the blue axis- type (1040)- align with green axis- type (100)

Drawing the Windows

  1. Create a reference point using Line tool (Type l) - click on the top left endpoint of the cover space group- Align on edge in group- type (6710)
  2. Use Line tool (Type l) - Click on the end point- align line to green axis- draw to the edge of the group on the other side
  3. Use the Select tool -delete the reference line drawn in step 1
  4. Use Line tool (Type l) -Click on each end point of the group to indicate the walls
  5. By now the middle part should be grey because SketchUp creates a surface in the area encircled by lines
Use the Select tool-single click on the grey part to select it- delete it
  6. Use Line tool (Type l) - click on one of the end points - align to blue axis- type (2900) to indicate height of wall
  7. Repeat step 6 with each end point- link the top of the endpoints together with line tool (it should create a box like shape made up of surfaces)
  8. Use the Select tool-delete the top surface
  9. In Materials-Glass& Mirror-Select Translucent Glass Safety-Click on each surface to apply material

Drawing the Walls

  1. Use the Rectangle tool (type R) - type (150, 4000)
  2. Use Extrude tool in the tool bar – type (2900)
  3. Use the Select tool-triple click to select the object- right click- Make Group
  4. Use Move tool  - press Ctrl key (this will duplicate the moved group)- align line to red axis-type (7600)
  5. Use the same technique to create the horizontal walls
  6. Use Move tool  to move the walls in place
  7. Use Move tool  on the Covered Space group-press Ctrl key (duplicate the moved group) - align line to blue axis-type (3300)

Drawing the Pillars

  1. Use the Rectangle tool (type R)  - type (200, 200)
  2. Use Extrude tool  in the tool bar – move it to the desired height using Cover Space and Open Terrace as guidelines (on edge outside active)
  3. Use the Select tool-triple click to select the object- right click- Make Group
  4. Use Move tool  - press Ctrl key (this will duplicate the moved group)- duplicate the pillars in place

This is the result, a simple representation of the Farnsworth House. By now you should be able to apply the basics of Sketchup to everyday modelling.
