Sophie’s final studio project, Vestiges and Echoes, is an exploration of the body as a mode of mark-making, and the trace it can leave. Through juxtaposing hard and soft materials from the everyday, she has created a textural series of abstract bodily transfers, reflecting on the way we view our own bodies within the world. Moreover, the works lend themselves as obscure portraits, both through the physical residue on each surface and the distorted reflections of the viewer within the work, allowing the audience to be implicated directly.
Sophie’s general artistic practice largely consists of working intuitively, combined with elements of abstraction and material exploration to develop her work. She enjoys challenging the way one views and understands an object, and playing with distortion and the manipulation of perspectives. Whilst she naturally gravitates towards painting and installation to translate these themes, Sophie also experiments with black and white analogue photography.
