Semester 1, 2019

Studio leader(s)

In The Compact City, students entering the Masters or Urban Planning and Design collaborate on their first planning studio project. In 2019, students prepared a strategic affordable housing plan for Footscray in consultation with City of Maribyrnong planners and affordable housing experts and providers.

Footscray is a suburb in Melbourne’s inner west that is undergoing significant demographic, economic, and physical change. It is the City of Maribyrnong’s fastest growing suburb with a population expected to increase by 140% by 2031. The area is attracting significant investment in high density housing as well as retail and commercial investment due to its central location, major transport connections, developable land, relative affordability, and its diverse cultural and creative vibrancy.  Approximately 40% of the population was born outside Australia and the area has long been a place where migrant communities have settled, started businesses and found employment in local manufacturing industries. However, the changing urban context has placed significant pressures on the area’s diverse local communities. This rapidly changing urban context provides an exciting and dynamic arena to explore the planning and design dimensions of compact cities.
