Master of Urban Planning and Design
Semester 1, 2020

Studio leader(s)

The Compact City 2020 studio focused on Braybrook, a suburb located 10 kilometres west of Melbourne’s Central Business District in the City of Maribyrnong. Braybrook is as a changing industrial and comparatively disadvantaged suburb of western Melbourne with a significant share of public housing.

The studio theme was ‘Braybrook Housing+’, with students from UPD and Architecture working in parallel to develop strategic housing plans and site-specific design responses for improving housing and related planning outcomes. Each ‘housing +’ strategy focused on a policy idea relevant to a broader vision for housing in Braybrook. These included: community Green Spaces, Employment, social Infrastructure, car parking and transport connectivity.

Students presented their work to the Victorian Planning Authority, City of Maribyrnong, Department of Health and Human Services, Department of Environment Land Water and Planning, and to community housing associations.
