Australia experienced rapid population growth in the years 2007-2009. The rate of growth declined after reaching its peak in 2008, and has experienced periods of increased growth and decline since that time. In the year to December 2017 the population growth at 1.6% was above the long-term average.

The preliminary estimated population was 24,770,700 at 31 December 2017, an increase of 388,000 people over the previous twelve months.

The 2017 annual growth rate at 1.6% compares with growth of 2.2% in 2008, 1.8% in 2009, 1.4% in 2010, 1.7% in 2011, 1.7% in 2012, 1.5% in 2013, 1.4% in 2014, 1.4% in 2015, and 1.6% in 2016.
