Andrew Milner

Andrew Milner is Professor Emeritus of English and Comparative Literature at Monash University and Honorary Professor of English and Comparative Literary Studies at Warwick University. His current research is focused on representations of extreme climate change in science fiction.

In 2010 he convened an international conference at Monash around the theme of ‘Changing the Climate’ and in 2011 published its proceedings as Changing the Climate: Utopia, Dystopia and Catastrophe, co-edited with Verity Burgmann and Simon Sellars. His 2012 book Locating Science Fiction concludes with an appeal for ‘SF that takes environmental problems as seriously as Cold War SF took the threat of nuclear war’. In 2014 he published a chapter on George Turner’s The Sea and Summer, the earliest Australian ‘cli-f’’ novel, in Green Planets: Ecology and Science Fiction, edited by Gerry Canavan and Kim Stanley Robinson; and in 2015 he co-authored an essay on ‘Ice, Fire and Flood: Science Fiction and the Anthropocene’ in an issue of Thesis Eleven devoted to SF.

In 2019 he convened an international conference at Monash's Prato campus around the theme of 'Utopia, Dystopia and Climate Change'. He and J.R. Burgmann have recently published Science Fiction and Climate Change: A Sociological Approach (2020) with Liverpool University Press. They have also co-authored ‘Climate Fiction: A World-Systems Approach’ in Cultural Sociology (2018), ‘A Short Pre-History of Climate Fiction’ in Extrapolation (2018) and ‘Anthropocene Fiction and World-Systems Analysis’ in the Journal of World-Systems Research (2020).
