James is a Research and Teaching Associate with the Monash Climate Change Communication Research Hub.

His doctoral research focused on the representation and communication of anthropogenic climate change in literature and other popular media. He is the co-author of Science Fiction and Climate Change: A Sociological Approach (Liverpool University Press, 2020), which was nominated for the British Science Fiction Association Award 2020 in the category of non-fiction.

James, who publishes under J.R. Burgmann, is also an emerging writer and journalist. In 2020 he was a finalist in the Everything Change Climate Fiction Prize. His debut novel Children of Tomorrow (Upswell, 2023) was highly commended in the Victorian Premier’s Literary Awards 2021 in the category of unpublished manuscripts. His arts criticism has been published across a range of publications.
