About the Australian Centre for Blood Diseases
We are a leading national and international blood diseases centre with recognized research, treatment and educational programs for blood diseases.
The Centre is at the forefront of understanding the process of blood clotting and blood cancers such as lymphoma, leukemia and myeloma.
The ACBD was initiated in the late 1990s as a centre within the Department of Medicine at Box Hill Hospital under the leadership of Professor Hatem Salem AM. Prof Salem retired in 2013. Professor Harshal Nandurkar was appointed Director in 2014.
The Centre has steadily grown in stature and become synonymous with cutting edge science focusing on blood diseases.
In 2004 the ACBD physically relocated to the new state-of-the-art Burnet Tower at the Alfred Medical Research and Education Precinct (AMREP). The combined Alfred and Box Hill Haematology expertise provides the most extensive network of haematology services in the State and is on a par with many of the leading international blood centres. ACBD now is part of the Central Clinical School, also at AMREP.
The centre is organised into four integrated divisions. These include:
- Clinical Haematology
- Diagnostic Haematology
- Clinical and Basic Research Programs
- Teaching and Education
The Eastern Clinical Research Unit (ECRU) is a clinical research division of the ACBD. ECRU was established in 1996 and is now the largest multidisciplinary clinical trial unit in Australia.
- Provide leadership in advancement of knowledge of blood diseases.
- Establish an information resource for the general public on matters relating to blood diseases.
- Act as an educational resource to other Medical Practitioners on matters relating to blood diseases.
- Apply and commercialise discoveries that arise from the basic research program.
- Attract leading clinicians and research investigators to work in the Centre thus raising the profile of the organisation Nationally and Internationally.
- Act as an advisory body to State and Federal Governments on matters relating to blood diseases.
